I sympathize with your predicament and wish your mom to be safe and happy. My family suspected a relative of mine passed away suddenly due to neligence and am approaching the hospital, but facing the same attitude, and interface from the hospital as you. I know it is very frustrating, espcially their attitute, honesty and level of transparency.
We do not know what damage has been done to your moms organs. IMO, advisable to seek second opinions.
Since this incident happened, highlight it internationally in a diplomatic manner with the object in getting advice. You'd be better protected. And if some of our local high-paying, arrogant doctors are wrong and dishing out nonesence, let it be a slap on their face if international opinion are to the contray.
IMO, prevent any spin-doctors from creating propoganda and tailoring the suitation to their advantage and exonerate themselves from future liability.
Read the newspapers, see how they describe the other patient as "very nice patient and family" (or to that effect), IMO the hospitals PR way of psychologically suppressing adverse actions from that patient.
The public is very forgettful, think of the future and prepare now.... you want your mom to get well, you need proper medical attention and they don't come cheap, if KK hospital can't get off the hook, then your mom has better chances of getting well.
Thanks Anonymous, I guess we both can understand the nonsense we have to put up. Negligence, mistakes aside, this is definitely not the way to deal with something that they have created.
Perhaps they are trying to make things difficult and eventually, hoping that the family members will eventually give up on pursuing the matter as it's draggy and time-consuming and mentally draining...
Hi, my mother is a cancer survivor too, and currently sees a doctor at GCC. However, before she was successfully treated, she was also a "victim" of negligent medical care at another hospital.
Having been through it, I can relate to how you feel. I trust that you will already have sought some advice about what to do, but these were the steps I took to successfully resolve my mother's issue with the other hospital:
1. Meet the hospital staff again and tell them that you want compensation for what happened. But don't threaten to sue them yet because it might turn ugly.
2. Seek legal advice. Better if you have some connections and can get this for free. Be sure to get a good law firm that has won suits for malpractices. And ask them what your chances of winning the case are.
3. Go to the Ministry of Health to make a formal complaint.
4. Write to the Minister in charge of your GRC. This is arguably the most important thing to do because nobody cares who you are, but they will take note if a Minister is directly involved.
There will be a lot of frustration and delays. The hospital has only one aim: to manage the fall-out by trying to play down the severity of the affair. So you have to very, very persistent to get your grievance redressed.
As someone who has gone through it, I would strongly urge you to go for it and be more aggressive, because it was the hospital's mistake. It would be wise for you to get compensation, because you never know what side effects the chemo overdose might have in the long term.
Hope you don't mind me giving my two cents' worth. Best of luck in resolving the matter. Here's wishing your mum a speedy recovery.
Face the fact that the Singapore Gov's non-transparency in their dealings, what will be expected from the Gov run hospitals?
Unless gov change, nothing will change especially the voices of ordinary mere mortals liked us who can only afford B2.
Last time when MM Lee wife got her 1st stroke, SIA converted an jet to ferry her back and she was back to her feet soon after that! PM Lee also got cancer but was treated and no relapses. Does this services and treatments are only available to the rich and powerful? Who paid for the special flight to ferry Mrs MM Lee and the chemo treatment of PM Lee?
To have more voices and righrs, its the citizens' duty to vote out such people in power. Please vote them out if you have chance to vote in coming election.
Mad was right. The outcome is quite predictable. They will play down this. The possibility would be to blame it on someone else as the Minister has mentioned. Or, they will foot the bill for you so you will not complaint further. Don't even think of sueing, you won't win. It's the citizens themselves to make the choice, but that choice is slim. Best wishes to your mum.
