Drug Blunder at KKH - Filled With Outrage & Disgust (Part 2)
The pharmacist then arranged for both my mum and Mdm Ng to be admitted into Ward B2 over night (A grave mistake committed by the hospital yet they are arranging for both victims to be staying in Ward B2) and requested for my sis and the son of Mdm Ng to follow her to the administrative counter to process the admission.
My sis then came back with a form requiring us to fill in the particulars for deduction of the stay in hospital. WE HAVE TO PAY TO STAY FOR THE MISTAKE MADE BY KKH?! Now tell me, if you were in the shoes of my family, how would you feel and what would you do? We were told that the payment will be made first by the patient before we can submit the claims!!! OMG!!!
From 11pm till past 1am, we didn't know what we were waiting for! Nurses came in to take blood pressure and asking my mum questions like: "Mdm Lee, do you have high blood pressure?" & "Have you undergone surgery recently?"...
It got Aunt Geraldine (my mum's sister) so mad that she demanded for doctors, not nurses asking routinal questions, to come and provide us with a more detailed analysis and check-up on my mum!!! About 10 - 15 minutes later, a run-of-the-mill doctor finally came to do some blood test etc. By then, my mum was experiencing flushing and palpitations, symptoms which she has never experienced after her first 2 chemotherapy sessions...

this is absolute blasphemy. i feel you. How would the doctors, staff etc and general public feel if it was their own mother? What kind of staff doesn't stand up to their mistakes and shun the victims? Are our nurses/pharmacists supposed to be cowards?
1) Complete unprofessionalism, ignorance and negligence on the staff's part, not just in administering a simple drug dose, but in getting facts right as to which drug is more potent.
2) No remorse and no apology whatsoever. Even if so, so far it seems that this case, the hospital is doing it just to placate the victims and not because they are genuine and sincere. This is a very serious matter!
3) While victim and loved ones had to go through such unnecessary and unjustified pain, the hospital had to group both victims into the same ward ... probably afraid that other patients will hear about their unprofessionalism and palpable lack of social values? I don't believe our govt sector and education system can actually allow such nursing graduates, doctors and incumbent procedures to dominate a place where the well-being of people should be at the forefront. If they don't care more, then any one can be a nurse, why get certified? After all these mistakes, what does the certificate prove? A dedicated but uncertified individual might be much better off serving the well-being and healths of our people. A fallacy of such complacent negligence can potentially lead to the traumatic loss of lives in a most unjust manner. Where' the action?
Where's the redress? Where's the reprieve? How is the victim going to be compensated for her needless worsening of symptoms? For the increased damage to her organs, immunity, expenses, etc?
And Singapore was supposed to be a world class hub for medical healthcare. All that talk is cheap.
I read about this case on Asiaone.com and, from the article the site carried, I went away with the following impressions:
1. The mistake was found quickly and several doctors were recalled on short notice.
2. The patient and family were willing to release the hospital and the culprits from blame and responsibility.
3. The patient was fairly treated by the hospital upon the discovery of the mistake.
4. The hospital waived its fees and could be seen in a generous light.
The content of this blog paints a ghastly different story. Totally disgusting. You have at the least my mental support. Hope your mum recovers without complications.
